گیاهان دارویی منابع غنی از متالیت‌های ثانویه هستند. شاهی گیاهی واجد ترکیبات موثره و متابولیت‌های ثانویه از جمله ترکیبات پلی‌فنل، آنتوسیانین‌، فلاونوئید می‌باشد که بواسطه این ترکیبات دارای اهمیت ویژه دارویی و اقتصادی است. ملاتونین یک تنظیم کننده رشد است که نقش آن در افزایش میزان متابولیت‌های ثانویه منجر به ایجاد تحمل گیاهان به تنش های محیطی می‌شود. در این مطالعه اثر ملاتونین برون‌زا بر تولید متابولیت‌های ثانویه گیاهچه شاهی (Lepidium sativum) در آزمایشی در قالب طرح کاملاً تصادفی با 5 تیمار ملاتونین (0، 5، 10، 50 و 100 میکرومولار) و 3 تکرار انجام گرفت. پس از اعمال تیمار، میزان رشد و محتوای رنگیزه‌ای، محتوای آب برگ و همچنین محتوای فلاونوییدها، آنتوسیانین‌ها و ترکیبات فنولی کل مورد بررسی قرار گرفت. تیمار بذر با ملاتونین بویژه در غلظت‌ 50 و 100 میکرو مولار موجب بهبود رشد و محتوای رنگیزه های فتوسنتزی گردید. همچنین مقادیر بالای ملاتونین متابولیت‌های ثانویه گیاه از جمله آنتوسیانین ها، کاروتنوئیدها و ترکیبات فنولی گیاه را افزایش داد. این تغییرات می‌تواند تایید کننده نقش ملاتونین بعنوان تنظیم کننده رشد و تاثیر آن بر بهبود رشد و مقاومت گیاهی ‌باشد.
