در بیماران مبتلا به ایسکمی مغزی، چه در زمان بستری و چه در جامعه، شیوع افسردگی ماژور مشهود است  از آنجا که افسردگی بر روی بهبود فرد تأثیر منفی دارد، تشخیص و درمان به­موقع آن ضروری است. این مطالعه به تأثیر عصاره­ی هیدروالکلی چویل بر شاخص­ های استرس­اکسیداتیو مغز و افسردگی پس از انسداد دوطرفه دائم شریان کاروتید مشترک یا همان ایسکمی/هایپوپرفیوژن در موش صحرایی های نر بالغ می پردازد. تعداد 35 موش صحرایی نر نژاد ویستار به گروه های کنترل، ایسکمی و گروه ­های ایسکمی دریافت­ کننده 14 روزه دوزهای (100، 200 و 400 mg/kg) عصاره چویل به روش گاواژ تقسیم شدند. برای ایجاد مدل حیوانی از ایسکمی/هایپوپرفیوژن مغزی دائم، شریان های کاروتید به فاصله یک هفته از بالا و پایین بسته شده و برش یافتند. برای سنجش افسردگی زمان بی­حرکتی در شنای اجباری اندازه ­گیری شد و سپس بافت مغز برای تفکیک هیپوکامپ و اندازه­ گیری مالون­دی­الدئید خارج شد. در گروه ایسکمی/هایپوپرفیوژن، زمان بی­حرکتی و  مالون­دی­الدئید افزایش معنی­ داری نشان داد و گاواژ  هر سه دوز عصاره چویل به موش­های ایسکمی  باعث کاهش قابل­ توجه غلظت مالون دی الدئید در هیپوکامپ و نیز کاهش زمان بی­حرکتی به­ ترتیب در دوز 100 و دوزهای mg/kg 200 و 400  گردید و افزایش زمان شنا در هرسه گروه دریافت کننده­ی عصاره مشاهده شد. عصاره چویل با اثر آنتی اکسیدانی می تواند از عوارض ناشی از ایسکمی از جمله افسردگی را بکاهد.
